Day 15 San Gimignano to Positano

Up early and on the road for 6 hours we made our way to Positano.  This was our biggest day of driving making our way about 300 miles south.  Fortunately, we had no traffic problems since we passed relatively close to both Rome and Naples.  We are told today is a holiday celebrating Italy's liberation during WW II, so that might have had some impact on the traffic.  Well, while on the motorway we were confronted with drivers passing us at rather high speeds as well as a fair number of drivers going exceedingly slow.  It did have the effect of keeping my attention.
Positano  is a small town perched on the hillside above the ocean with one road.  This road is very narrow and runs one direction through town.  If you miss your destination you are forced to complete you trip through town and then circle back outside of town to start your circuit again.   The roads here along the coast are carved into the side of the hill and allow barely enough room for two cars to pass much less the omnipresent busses.  Motorcycles stream past you seemingly without care for their own safety.  It is somewhat unnerving but they seemed used to the danger.  Our hotel provides parking which is a recommendation in itself.  I would hate to be here and have to find my own parking place and this is not the height of their season.  The roads must slow to a crawl in mid-summer.   So once parked and in your hotel everybody walks.  The town is organized for walkers with small shops lining the streets and the walk way down to the beach.  The beach is not very inviting since it is rather rough.  There are ferries that take travelers to Capri, Salerno and Amalfi that leave from the quay at the side of the beach.  That is in our future.  All in all a good day to be settled in our hotel early after the drive.

Chris - Our hotel, Hotel Poseidon, is perched on the side of a hill and overlooks the active waterfront. Our standard room has a balcony with table and chairs, and does have the waterfront view, when it warms up it will be a great place to relax. Positano is a delightful town to use as our home base and has all the necessary food items I need. While here I've read that you need to eat seafood, buffalo mozzarella and anything lemon....WILL DO!! Paul has made a step toward that by buying a small bottle of Limoncello, an alcohol that I know to be a big favorite of George Clooney.

Tomorrow - a drive up the Amalfi Coast.

  1. Very pretty and the weather looks great. Dad's driving tales sound very familiar, I am surprised the more people don't get hurt on the roads in Italy. I can't remember, when do you two get back stateside? I forgot to mark it on my calendar. Have a great and safe drive tomorrow.
